Okami
Okami is our self-appointed pack leader, staying true to his name, which means "great god" or "wolf" in Japanese. He is a Siberian husky, Alaskan malamute, and German shepard mix. Born in 2021, Okami came to us at just ten months of age.
Okami's past was one filled with equal parts love and equal parts trauma. He was originally purchased as a pet by a mom and daughter, but as with most wolf dogs, proved to be more than they were able to handle.
He was taken in by a man that left Okami in a small crate for several days at a time, without food or water. As a result, Okami began eating his own stools to survive. To this day, we have to carefully monitor Okami's teeth since they decayed so much during this time period.
A very kind woman rescued Okami, which is when she found us to assist with his care. When he arrived, he had no socialization skills and was fearful of entering his enclosure because the dog house scared him, reminding him of his traumatic past.
Since joining our pack, Okami has blossomed into a sweet man beloved by all. He is now five years old and knows 33 different commands after working with our team of trainers. He is proof that working dogs require a lot of attention, so we keep him busy with a variety of enrichment from property walks to puzzles.
He has two girlfriends, Sakari and JoJo. His favorite time of the year is winter, and he just comes alive in the snow. As a treat, he gets his favorite: cottage cheese straight from the container! In summer he turns into a proper water dog, splashing in the pool and getting sprayed by the hose.
Bear

Sakari
Sakari is a precious soul. She came to us in February of 2022, when she was rescued alongside her sister Khaia from a shelter down south.

Juniper
Juniper, sometimes called June, Juni, or Junebug.
JoJo
JoJo is such a sweet, gentle lady. She has quite the mix, part malamute, Siberian husky, German Shepard, Samoyed, and even a little bit of Norweigian Elkhound. Born in January 2021, JoJo spent a brief period living on a farm in New Jersey. While she was cared for, it became difficult for the family to keep up with the special needs of a wolf hybrid and high-energy breed.
JoJo came to us in 2024. To this day, she is still learning to trust humans. While still quite timid, her progress has been incredible. Occassionally, she will even approach for a gentle backscratch! When she joined our pack, she quickly bonded with Okami, who has remained her best friend. They love to chase eachother around the yard, as fast as they can (we think she is even faster than Okami). In the afternoon, JoJo decides it is time to sunbathe or dig a snowy hole to curl up in for a nap under a tree.
Like all of our wolves, JoJo prefers snowy days. She can be found curled up on the snow pile, other times hanging out on the roof of her house to balance the cold snow with a little sunbathing. She has a special enclosure, as this girl is not only fast, she can jump around eight feet high, scale fences, and dig under gates like an expert.
JoJo enjoys the warmer months swimming in her pool, hiding toys around the yard, and sitting under her favorite corner tree, which we call "the lounge." We hope that one day, she feels comfortable enough to socialize with the rest of our pack.
Howl
Howl came to our sanctuary from Rhode Island after being rescued by the RISPCA in September of 2023. While he had a loving owner that meant well, she became overwhelmed with her own animal rescue operation that was ultimately deemed a hoarding situation with 30 other dogs. We still keep in touch with his former mom, who continues to give us donations each year.
He is a mix of husky, Alaskan malamute, and German shepard. Born in 2006, he is now ten years old but maintains big puppy energy. He can be found zipping around the yard, chasing remote control cars, or digging holes in search of critters.
Some details of his past trauma are still missing, including his fear of sunglasses, hats, and hoods. In a sign of respect, we all ensure he feels safe by taking these items off before interacting with him (he will bark a lot otherwise).
Three years into his life with us, Howl has adapted incredibly well. While working with an animal communicator, we learned he was separated from his beloved sister, a story that checked out with prior owners. Since being at Wolves of Maine, he has found a second sister and best friend in Khaia.
When he is taking a break from playtime, Howl loves to cuddle with his favorite volunteers. Between a wolf and a dog, he could almost be a normal pet because of how much he loves humans. On Fridays, one of our directors enoys a special lunch with him: a grilled ham and cheese sandwich! This has become an adorblee tradition that he looks forward to each week.
Max
Max has a personality as big as his ears. Born in March of 2023, he spent the first year of his life wandering the streets of Florida. Like many strays, he was likely dumped and left to fend for himself. Eventually, he landed in a shelter. He was adopted and returned, not just once, but three times. His energetic nature, as with most hybrids, was difficult to manage in a standard household. But when he came to our sanctuary in Maine, his life changed entirely. With our large open yard and his very own home, Max finally found his forever family.
As a shepherd mix, he is equal parts goofy and smart. Max knows dozens of commands, excels at the obstacle course, and acts as our in-house security team. Whenever there is a delivery, he makes sure to let us know! He loves people, almost as much as he loves his fluffy toys. Any time we get new toys, Max tries to claim them as his own to add to his growing collection. He is also known to steal dish towels, playing keep-away with them before running off to snuggle with his trophy towel.
His favorite activity is definitely chasing his girlfriend, JoJo, around the yard (especially if it is snowing). A stark difference from the Florida heat, Max discovered his love for snow, thriving in winter by rolling around under the snowflakes and searching for the eggs we hide in the snow piles. While JoJo may be his favorite, he also loves spending time with Sakari and Kaiah.
On hot days, you can find this love bug cooling down in his pool or hanging out in the barn with his favorite humans. During lunchtime, he likes to lounge on the couch next to the fan. Aside from spending time with his friends, Max loves playing ball and chasing his remote-controlled truck around the yard.
